What is a neck lift

A neck lift, also known as a platysmaplasty, is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to rejuvenate the neck by removing excess skin and fat and firming the underlying muscles. This can reduce or eliminate wrinkles, loose skin and a “double chin,” leading to a tighter and more youthful-looking neck. The procedure can be performed on its own or in combination with other procedures, such as a facelift, for a more complete rejuvenation of the face and neck.

The process of a neck lift

Neck lift surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia or sedation. The procedure during surgery may vary depending on the consultation between the patient and the doctor. As a result of this decision, a traditional neck lift may be performed, or the surgery may be performed with a limited incision.

In a conventional neck lift, the fat in the jaw is divided and shaped. The tissue under the skin is repositioned. During this process, the platysma muscle is stretched. An additional incision is often made if liposuction and muscle repair are needed.

In the limited-incision procedure, only an incision is made around the ear. The length of this incision is short and the results may be limited. At the end of both procedures, the incisions are closed with sutures or skin glue. If resorbable sutures are not used, the sutures should be removed by the surgeon after a few days.

Frequently asked questions about a neck lift

A neck lift specifically targets the area around the neck and jawline, while a facelift addresses the face and sometimes the neck. Many patients choose to combine both procedures for an overall rejuvenation of the face and neck.

As with any surgical procedure, there are risks, such as infection, bleeding, scarring, asymmetry or numbness. However, complications are rare when the procedure is performed by an experienced and qualified surgeon.

A neck lift is ideal for people who suffer from sagging skin, wrinkles or fat deposits on the neck. This often occurs due to aging, weight loss or genetic factors. The treatment is suitable for both men and women who want a tighter jawline and smooth neck.

Most patients can return to work after about 1 to 2 weeks, depending on the extent of the procedure. Swelling and bruising may persist for several weeks, but these gradually subside. The final result is often visible after 1 to 3 months, when the swelling is completely gone.
